The British rapper Taran Kaur Dhillon is being investigated by Indian police after a lawyer in the city of Varanasi claimed he was "deeply hurt" by her Facebook posts against senior Indian politicians.

Taran goes by the stage name 'Hard Kaur' and moved to India a few years ago to further her career in music. She is also well known for being outspoken and political in her views.

On Monday this week she posted a series of comments on Facebook and Instagram on Hindu nationalist leaders.

She called the leader of the Hindutva organisation Mohan Bhagat "a racist murderer" and the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath "Rapeman Yogi". The full posts are below.

On Wednesday, Varanasi-based lawyer Shashank Shekhar lodged a complaint with the police claiming he was "deeply hurt" by her comments as a fellow RSS member.

The complaint was filed under Sections 124A (sedition), 153 (promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion), 500 (defamation) 505 (intent to incite) and Section 66 of the IT Act.

Hard Kaur also posted of a picture of the slain journalist Ghauri Lankesh, murdered last year by a Hindu extremist, with the caption 'You will not be forgotten'.

Inspector Vijay Pratap Singh told the Times of India he was investigating the matter.

Laws against Sedition have been frequently used against social media posts in India to silence criticism of the government. The Supreme Court of India recently ruled that this amounted to a misuse of the law.

The Wire website reported that the criminal defamation and IT act charges also represented a misapplication of law.
