A journalist explains why Shamima Begum citizenship controversy could affect any of us

UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid is intent on stripping away ISIS-sympathiser Shamima Begum's British citizenship.

So what? It doesn't affect me, you might say.

Don't be so sure. In the last few years, the Conservatives have quietly created a 'two tier' citizenship, whereby people who have links to another country through their parents, can be stripped off their citizenship.

Without trial. Without explanation. And without any chance of an appeal.

In fact it happened to one man who went to visit his relatives in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and couldn't return back. He has no idea why.

Confused? Alarmed?

Patrick Galey is a journalists for the AFP news organization, but was previously with the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ).
