Sadaf Jaffer confirmed as the first Pakistani-American woman mayor

It was a moment rich in symbolism and history. Earlier this week New Jersey's first Sikh Attorney General, Gurbir Grewal, confirmed the state's first South Asian woman, Sadaf Jaffer, as mayor.

As Ms Jaffer became the mayor of the city of Montgomery, NJ, she also became the nation's first Pakistani-American woman to be elected to such a post.

But she isn't the first South Asian woman mayor across the US - that honour belongs to Yuba City's Preet Dibdal.

Nevertheless it was another glass ceiling shattered and another step forward for diversity and representation.

New Jersey has another desi mayor in the form of Ravi Bhalla, from Hoboken.

Sadaf Jaffer has a doctorate from Harvard University in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations.

She said: "The people of this community are kind, caring, and generous. I see my role as mayor to not only serve the people of this community but also bring them together for purpose of the common good and promote the synergies that result when we work together."

She was standing alongside her husband and daughter.
