The British Tamil intellectual Ambalavaner Sivanandan passed away on Wednesday 3rd January, the Institute of Race Relations (IRR) confirmed in a statement today.

Mr Sivanandan was Director Emeritus of the IRR and founding editor of Race & Class. But more than that he was a fierce intellectual and prolific writer who inspired a generation with his ideas on race and class.

Such was his influence that the music group Asian Dub Foundation even sampled him for one of their tracks: Colour Line

Tributes to his work were posted online today, referencing the influence he had.

The IRR has invited people to leave tributes and personal memories on their website too.
