If you watched Netflix's hit series Black Mirror and wondered who the Asian actress was (Ep. 3), you're not alone.

Barfi Culture is kicking off the year with a profile of Kiran Sonia Sawar as it looks likely this will be her breakout year.

Kiran first came to prominence in 2016 when she played Salma in the BBC film Murdered By My Father. The drama centres around a young woman of Pakistani background who falls in love with a young man, different to the one her father wants her to marry.

"It was quite a difficult project, emotionally and physically, but the thing that made it most harrowing for me was the constant reminder that this was just me acting, and that actually its a problem that young people in the UK and around the world live through every day," she later said in an interview.

The film went on to win BAFTA and RTS awards, firmly establishing her credentials early on.

But her first big acting role came in 2014 when she starred in Tamasha Theatre's My Name Is..., a play applauded by writer Yasmin Alibhai-Brown as one of her favourites that year.

More recently, she played young Sathnam's mother in the BBC's Boy With a Top Knot and acted in a series of Channel 4 shorts called The Educatoror (below).

So how did the Black Mirror part come about, we asked?

"I just auditioned for the part at the beginning of this year, filmed out in Iceland for a month," she told Barfi Culture. "It was the most incredible experience."

In the episode Kiran plays a character investigating a crash, using a device that accesses people's memories. The episode focuses on how people's memories are shaped by their emotions.

Kiran grew up in Glasgow (she still has a thick Glasweigan accent) but now lives in London.

So what's next?

She will be back on our screens next week when ITV's six-part series Next of Kin goes on air, with Archie Panjabi in the lead role. The series also stars the Indian actress Shabana Azmi.
