Jagmeet Singh to contest by-election in British Columbia so he can be an MP

Jagmeet Singh may be leader of the NDP in Canada but he is still not a Member of Parliament.

And that's a problem because in Canada you cannot be elected Prime Minister unless you are also an MP. Now he's gearing up to change that.

Last night Singh announced he will contest the upcoming by-election in Burnaby South, a suburb of Vancouver.

The announcement caught many by surprise as Singh hails from Brampton, Ontario, rather than British Columbia. But there weren't many easy options for him coming up in his hometown.

In Burnaby South he has the advantage of a seat already held by the NDP. Its current MP, Kennedy Stewart, resigned in June to run for mayor of Vancouver.

"Of the seven ridings that have held byelections since he took over the NDP — and those where byelections are pending — Burnaby South is the first to fall vacant where the New Democrats have a realistic shot," wrote Éric Grenier at CBC News.

Singh is planning to campaign on healthcare, housing costs, dealing with climate change and getting the super-rich to pay their fair share of taxes.

"People are being squeezed while the super rich are given huge tax loopholes to avoid paying their fair share. This hurts our ability to invest in infrastructure & hospitals that Burnaby urgently needs – yet the Liberals turn a blind eye to $300B sitting in offshore tax havens," he tweeted last night.

"These are real struggles Canadians face right now while the government continues to sit on their hands and wait. We can’t afford to wait. Canadians are done waiting."

A date for the by-election has not yet been set but should take place in coming months.
