Jagmeet Singh's younger brother Gurratan Singh won the nomination to be the New Democratic Party's candidate for Brampton East last night. He had announced his intention to run in March this year.

Brampton East is situated in the Greater Toronto Area and heavily dominated by Punjabi Sikhs. The riding was created in 2015 from parts of Bramalea-Gore-Malton (a seat Jagmeet held between 2011 and 2017) and parts of Brampton-Springdale.

"I love this community and I want to work to make it better," Gurratan Singh wrote when he announced his candidacy. "The time for inaction is over. We can either sit on the sidelines and hope for things to get better, or we can get involved. I want to be your voice and fight for what matters to you. This June we have an opportunity to make that happen."

After he won the nomination last night, Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath said: "Gurratan will be a fantastic representative for this riding and the people of Brampton, and I’m proud to have his voice be a part of our movement for change for the better in Ontario."

33-year-old Singh is an accomplished criminal defence lawyer.

Gurratan will now will now face a formidable opponent: the Liberal Party's candidate Parminder Singh.

Parminder Singh is a health-care professional and previously worked as a sports and health commentator for Omni TV, CBC and other broadcasters. He was also chair of Sikhs for SickKids, which helped raise close to $100,000 for SickKids Hospital, and is well known for fundraising campaigns for local hospitals and charities.

The provincial election is set for June 7th, 2018. The winning candidate will be seated in Ontario's Provincial Parliament.
