Hasan Minaj has become the first desi American to sign a deal to host a weekly comedy show on Netflix. The yet-unnamed show will stream later this year.
"I'm thrilled to be joining the Netflix family as the country braces for another election season — and like you, I cannot wait to find out who Putin picks this time," he joked in a statement today. The news was first announced by The Hollywood Reporter.
Netflix already has a relationship with the Indian-American comedian: it had exclusive rights to 'Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King' - an hour-long special that released last year.
"I've been a big fan of Hasan's for many years," said Netflix's Bela Bajaria. "He's a phenomenal writer with a distinct point of view [and] he is a brilliant performer, who is hilarious both onstage and off. And more importantly, he isn't afraid to share his thoughtful voice and unique perspective."
Bela Bajaria is the industry's highest-placed Indian-American executive, according to THR.
The comedian first came to prominence when he joined the Daily Show as a correspondent for Jon Stewart. He is still with the show, now presented by Trevor Noah. But his big break came when his speech at the White House Correspondents' Dinner last year went viral.
The Netflix deal puts him firmly on the map. It is reported to have won a fierce bidding war against Comedy Central for it.
Netflix said the series will be an opportunity for him to explore modern cultural and political landscapes. It has already committed to a whopping 32 episodes.
